S&P/TSX composite down despite strength in energy stocks as oil prices rise

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index was down in late-morning trading despite strength in the energy sector as oil prices moved higher, while U.S. stock markets moved lower.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 50.96 points at 35,646.53.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 203.18 points at 52,370.11. The S&P 500 index was down 51.33 points at 7,605.65, while the Nasdaq composite was down 213.69 points at 26,119.35.

The Canadian dollar traded for 71.82 cents US compared with 72.12 cents US on Friday.

The October crude oil contract was up US$2.65 at US$102.70 per barrel.

The December gold contract was down US$85.90 at US$4,323.00 an ounce.
