John Passalacqua, CEO & Director of First Phosphate Corp. (CSE: PHOS | Nasdaq: PHOS | OTCQX: FRSPF | FSE: KD0), discusses the mineral development and clean tech company’s focus on onshoring the lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery industry into North America. Starting from a high-purity igneous phosphate mine in Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, Québec, the company aims to produce phosphoric acid and eventually LFP cathode active material, as demand for a secure domestic battery supply chain grows across energy storage, AI data centres, defence, and electric vehicles.

Pure-play phosphate focus sets First Phosphate apart in LFP battery materials

Unlike many battery materials peers, First Phosphate is focused entirely on phosphate rather than lithium. According to Passalacqua, there are about 150 publicly traded companies worldwide involved in some form of lithium extraction or purification, while phosphate for electrification remains a far less crowded field. “The only company that we know of that is 100% dedicated to [high-purity igneous] phosphate for the lithium iron phosphate battery industry is First Phosphate,” says Passalacqua. He describes phosphate as a 61% slice of the pie of the LFP cathode, compared to a 4% slice for lithium. That gives the company a dedicated position in a segment with few direct competitors.

LFP battery demand drives the market opportunity for igneous phosphate

With LFP chemistry reshaping the battery landscape, First Phosphate is positioned to capture growing demand for a North American LFP battery supply chain. Passalacqua says LFP batteries now make up about 77% of all batteries produced worldwide. They serve a wide range of end markets, including energy storage, AI data centres, defence, marine and agricultural applications, drones, and electric vehicles. By focusing on high-purity igneous phosphate from Québec, the company aims to give investors early exposure to a battery materials category that, according to Passalacqua, was not previously available to Nasdaq investors.

Nasdaq listing expands First Phosphate’s access to global investors

First Phosphate recently listed on the Nasdaq Global Market under the ticker PHOS, alongside its existing listing on the Canadian Securities Exchange. Passalacqua notes the company traded more stock over the past four to six weeks after the initial Nasdaq listing than it had in its whole prior history. Many institutional and larger investors require a listing on a major exchange, such as Nasdaq, NYSE, or Euronext, before they can acquire shares. “It really opens up our doors to any investor around the world now,” says Passalacqua. Looking ahead, the company continues to advance its plans for phosphoric acid purification and LFP cathode active materials production.

First Phosphate positioned to build North America’s LFP battery supply chain

As First Phosphate works to onshore the LFP battery industry, it stands at the intersection of electrification and North American supply chain security. With a high-purity igneous phosphate resource and a new Nasdaq listing, the company is positioned to deliver steady progress in Québec’s battery materials sector. That positioning is already drawing attention from institutional investors.

First Phosphate’s pure-play approach to LFP battery materials helped earn it a spot as a Top Pick at Capital Event Management’s (CEM) Muskoka 2026 investment conference, where institutional investors met with a range of public issuers. John Passalacqua: First Phosphate is a mineral development and clean tech company dedicated to onshoring the lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery industry into North America. We start with a very high-purity igneous phosphate [deposit] in Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, Québec, and from there, we wish to purify phosphoric acid and eventually produce LFP cathode active materials that go into lithium iron phosphate batteries, which are now about 77% of all batteries produced on planet Earth. [LFP batteries] go into all kinds of different industries, from energy storage to AI data centres, defence, marine, agricultural applications, drones, small bicycles, skateboards, and right up to electric vehicles.

The company had traditionally been listed on the Canadian Securities Exchange. Now we’re listed on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol PHOS. That’s been a great addition for the company. Just over the last four to six weeks [since the Nasdaq listing], we’ve traded more stock than we had in the whole prior history of the company.

So it gets us exposure to the U.S. markets, but it’s also important for the U.S. markets because it’s the first time that the igneous phosphate category has been made available to the U.S. and global investors on Nasdaq. There were a lot of institutional investors and other larger investors that needed us to be listed on a major worldwide exchange such as Nasdaq, NYSE, or Euronext in order to be able to start acquiring shares of the company. Now that we’re listed on that exchange, that meets one of their requirements, as well as some of the others, and they’re able to become involved in the [capital ownership] of the company.

It really opens up our doors to any investor around the world now. If you look at the number of publicly traded companies in the world that are involved in some form of extraction or purification of lithium, there are about 150 of them. Whereas when you look at phosphate, who’s out there in terms of phosphate for electrification? The only company that we know of that is 100% dedicated to [high-purity igneous] phosphate for the lithium iron phosphate battery industry is First Phosphate. We’re one company going after a really big slice of the pie [of the LFP cathode], 61% [for phosphate], whereas when you look at lithium, you’ve got 150 companies going after what is only a 4% slice of the pie [of the LFP cathode].
