S&P/TSX composite finishes in negative territory, U.S. markets see mixed results

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index edged lower, weighed down by weakness in consumer cyclical stocks, while U.S. markets posted mixed results. 

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 44.97 points at 35,706.46.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 161.61 points at 51,349.98. The S&P 500 index was down 1.90 points at 7,704.13, while the Nasdaq composite was up 3.34 points at 26,939.37.

The Canadian dollar traded for 70.74 cents US compared with 70.94 cents US on Wednesday.

The November crude oil contract was up US$2.45 at US$94.61 per barrel.    

The December gold contract was down US$20.40 at US$4,298.00 an ounce.
